A needs-first method for comparing processors, memory, storage, screens and repairability.

Begin with the work, not the specification sheet

Write down the three tasks that matter most and the software they require. Office work, development, video editing and gaming place very different demands on a computer, so a premium processor is not automatically the right investment.

Balance memory, storage and battery life

Memory affects how comfortably several applications run together, while solid-state storage affects capacity and responsiveness. Battery claims are useful only when test conditions resemble your own brightness, connectivity and workload.

Look beyond launch-day speed

A good laptop should remain useful for years. Check upgrade options, port selection, warranty coverage, repair access and the manufacturer’s update record before deciding that a thin design or benchmark score represents better value.
