A clear checklist for understanding accounts, microphones, cloud dependence and updates.

Identify what leaves the home

Some devices process commands locally; others send audio, video or usage data to remote servers. Read the privacy controls and decide whether the convenience is proportionate to the information collected.

Plan for internet and company failure

A light switch should ideally remain useful when the connection is down. Check local controls, export options and whether the device becomes unusable if its cloud service closes.

Secure the surrounding system

Use a unique password, enable stronger sign-in protection and keep firmware updated. Place less-trusted devices on a separate network when your router supports it, and remove products you no longer use.
