What digital twins can realistically do across design, construction and building operations.
A digital twin is more than a visual model
The term usually describes a digital representation connected to information about a real asset. Its value depends on the questions it answers, the freshness of data and the processes that maintain the connection—not visual realism alone.
Uses change through the asset lifecycle
Design teams can coordinate systems, construction teams can compare progress and operators can investigate performance or maintenance. Each stage needs different data and ownership. Trying to build one model for every possible purpose can create unnecessary complexity.
Plan maintenance and responsibility
Models become unreliable when equipment changes but records do not. Define who updates information, which sources are authoritative and how accuracy is checked. Start with a bounded use case whose benefit can be measured before expanding.
