Intype is not technically free, but you can try out their Alpha builds. You can expect that these builds, by virtue of being pre-Beta even, won't be very stable, but will work. (Apart from a few hangs the app's performed very well).

And a book? I haven't read this myself but Head First HTML with XHTML & CSS might be good. Beginning HTML with CSS and XHTML, too, is supposed to be good, although I've heard it's not quite as friendly to the beginner as the name would suggest. (You can click those names for Amazon links).

¡Hola!

First off, you're going to India? When did this happen?

Also, Microsoft I do not hate; just can't relate to them as much as other companies. Their Mac Business Unit and Phillipe Starck mice are great!

As for web design, I use neither. Because I'm a Mac user, Expression Web is out, and Dreamweaver's too expensive (although nice, I'll admit).

It really doesn't matter which editor you use to create your websites. The first step to learning web design is to teach yourself HTML and CSS; the first one you use to structure your pages (with content), the second one to style/design. You can try these HTML and CSS beginner's guides.

I myself use free tools Taco HTML Edit, TextWranger and Intype (if I'm on a Win PC), all of which are free. For a complete list of what I used to make my website, check out the Powered-by post here.

Hope this helps.

oie satu,

what do you use to design web pages? do you use dreamweaver? or do you use expression web? wait, why am i asking this, don't you hate microsoft? anyway, i wanted to learn something, so i thought why not dab my hands into web designing? but i don't know where to start or how to start. i'll be going to india soon, so by that time i want to know which software to get and learn. apparently PC magazine rates expression web as being more usable (less complicated) but thinks dreamweaver cs3 has everything. what say you?
