I thought this was interesting phrasing, the sort you wouldn’t have in the US.

Yeah, it could mean any of those things, but in this case it means "exit", since they don't want people exiting the trains on that side. (Since the doors are manually operated).

yeah that's quite peculiar. one'd would normally (in australia) say the full sentence (such as in this case: do not alight from the train from this side of the platform).
for foreign English speaker like me its hard to understand what the "Do not alight this side" means. For me it could be " not to rest there" or not to switch the light on or even not to smoke". I am guessing the message is targeted towards passerby.
